Three incredible educators. One amazing community.

Celebrating Excellence: Our A+ Educator Award Winners

Every month during the school year, Augusta County Public Schools proudly honors three outstanding educators through our A+ Educator Awards program. These individuals are nominated by their peers and recognized for their dedication, innovation, and impact on students. This month, we are thrilled to spotlight three exceptional teachers who embody the very best of education.

Elementary Teacher of the Month: Mr. Taz Gebhardt

Mr. Gebhardt, a fourth-grade teacher at Guy K. Stump Elementary School, has embraced this year’s new initiatives and transformed them into powerful tools for student success. Teaching fourth-grade math, he uses responsive classroom strategies to build strong relationships and foster a positive learning environment. His students know he believes in them and encourages them to take risks, work hard, and strive for excellence every day.
Through his commitment to higher-level thinking and the 5 C’s, Mr. Gebhardt makes math accessible and relevant, creating a classroom where resilience and curiosity thrive.

Middle School Teacher of the Month: Ms. Masako Hikami

As an ESL teacher at Stewart Middle School, Ms. Hikami works tirelessly to support students learning English as a second language. She bridges the gap between students’ first language and English, helping them develop the academic vocabulary needed for success. Collaborating with other teachers, she creates individualized plans to ensure every student can access instructional materials.
Beyond language, Ms. Hikami introduces students to American culture—like her recent lesson on Thanksgiving and Black Friday—helping them feel connected and confident. Her dedication empowers students to succeed both in and out of the classroom.

High School Teacher of the Month: Mrs. Martha Mikell

At Stuarts Draft High School, Mrs. Mikell brings energy and enthusiasm to her Chemistry and Biology II classes. Her classroom is a place of high expectations, mutual respect, and growth, where students are encouraged to challenge themselves and learn from mistakes.
Outside the classroom, Mrs. Mikell serves as National Honor Society Advisor, guiding students in fulfilling their commitment to community service. She’s also the voice of the Draft Express Marching Band, cheering from the press box at every home game and competition. Her passion for teaching and community involvement makes her a true role model.
