October A+ Educators
Each month throughout the school year, we’re proud to recognize outstanding teachers across Augusta County who go above and beyond for their students and communities. These A+ Educators embody dedication, creativity, and heart — inspiring those around them and shaping the next generation of learners.
🌟 Makenzie DeLea-King – North River Elementary School
Mrs. Ellie Moser is our Elementary Teacher of the Month. Mrs. Moser has been an incredible addition to the Riverheads Elementary staff and our ACPS librarian team. Her leadership helped bring Beanstack, a reading incentive program, to Riverheads, and thanks in part to her success, it is now being used across all ACPS elementary schools. Ellie is a true collaborator, working with librarians at RMS and RHS to host a Riverheads book fair at The Book Dragon in Staunton, and partnering with colleagues to plan meaningful community events like STEAM Night and a combined Family Literacy & STEAM Night. She supports the Good News Gladiator program by carefully selecting reward books for the book vending machine and is transforming the library by “genrefying” the collection so students can more easily find books they love.
Mrs. Moser’s enthusiasm, creativity, and positive energy are contagious, making her a huge asset for student engagement and a valued teammate across our division. Congratulations, Ellie Moser, our Elementary Teacher of the Month!
🎶 Marshelle “Shelly” Moore – Riverheads Middle School
Meg Hellenga, 7th grade social studies teacher at Stuarts Draft Middle School, is the September Lingo Middle School Teacher of the Month. Ms. Hellenga is a dedicated professional who works hard to make sure her students have a meaningful experience in her Social Studies class. Ms. Hellenga has served on several curriculum committees to gather and improve resources not only for her students, but also those throughout Augusta County. Additionally, she seeks out professional development opportunities to improve her practice and stay up to date in social studies education. In fact, earlier this week she was offered a position on the committee reviewing History/Social Studies Textbooks for approval by the VDOE. She is also a model of professional collaboration. She regularly plans with her grade level colleague and occasionally combines their classes to provide meaningful learning experiences for their students. For these reasons and many others, Ms. Hellenga is our September Middle School Lingo Teacher of the Month.
💼 Melissa Talley – Wilson Memorial High School
Dr. Carl Flippin is our September High School Teacher of the Month. Dr. Flippin is an English teacher at Wilson Memorial High School and in addition to serving as an English teacher, Dr. Flippin coordinates WMHS graduation ceremonies and serves as the chair of the English department. Dr. Flippin’s classes encourage students to think and write critically and deeply about the world around them through the texts they are reading. He provides a great example of the integration of reading and writing not only as a skill for the English classroom but as a life skill. He’s provided an excellent voice for his department at the division level while representing WMHS on multiple occasions in various division initiatives. Dr. Flippin’s leadership inside and outside of the classroom make him an excellent choice for our September High School Lingo Teacher of the Month.
Celebrating Excellence, Together
We’re proud to celebrate these educators for their dedication and passion. Their work reflects the heart of our schools and the spirit of our community — reminding us that learning thrives when supported by teachers who truly care. Congratulations again to all of this month’s A+ Educators!
As part of our program, each honoree receives a $20 gift card to Pizza Luca in downtown Staunton —a small token of appreciation for the tremendous work they do every day.
Here’s to a new school year filled with inspiration, growth, and community pride. Thank you to all our educators for being A+.
